Endrestøl, A., Bengtson, R. & Dahle, A. 2022. Kartlegging av klippeblåvinge Scolitantides orion i Norge 2021. NINA Rapport 2113. Norsk institutt for naturforskning.
Endrestøl, A., Bengtson, R. & Dahle, A. 2022. Mapping of the Chequered Blue Butterfly Scolitantides orion in Norway 2021. NINA Report 2113. Norwegian Institute for Nature Research. The Chequered Blue Scolitantides orion is one of the rarest and most threatened butterflies in Norway. According to The 2021 Norwegian Red List for Species, the Chequered Blue is still considered critically endangered (CR) in Norway. This is because a sharp decline in the species’ range in Norway has been observed, and that new surveys of old and other potential sites have not resulted in the discovery of new localities for the butterfly – except a new locality detected in Sponvika at Svinesund in Halden municipality in Østfold in 2017. The species is a prioritized species according to the Norwegian Nature Diversity Act. This report summarizes results of the Chequered Blue survey at Torpbukta, Monolittbruddet, Hov, Nokkedal, and Sponvika in Halden municipality in 2021. The species was also searched for on other localities in Risør and Tvedestrand municipalities in 2021, but no sign of the species where found at these localities. In the area of Torpbukta and the surrounding area in Halden municipality, 65 eggs and two larvae of the Chequered Blue were found in 2021, which is all time low compared to recent years. Also 62 eggs and two larvae, were found along Hovsveien. At Nokkedal a total of as much as 130 eggs and three larvae were found. So many individuals have never been detected at this small site. We found 44 eggs and no larvae of the Chequered Blue at the Monolith quarry (including Sveen), and in Sponvika we found 101 eggs and 14 larvae. Also for Sponvika, this is the highest number of eggs registered since the species was discovered there in 2017. A total of 402 eggs and 21 larvae of the Chequered Blue were found in Halden municipality in 2021, compared to 194 eggs and 56 larvae in 2020. In 2021, a total of 32 individuals of ants were collected on larvae of the Chequered Blue (eight samples in total). All samples contained the ant species Lasius platythorax/niger, and therefore did not represent anything new compared to previous years. We have so far still detected 13 species of ants (in five genera) on larvae of the Chequered Blue, in addition to one species on/at an egg. This is total to the project in Halden and Tvedestrand in the period 2010–2021, even though there have been no signs of the Chequered Blue in Tvedestrand after 2012. In addition, possible management measures are given for Sponvika and Hov, and results from a heavy metal analyzes of orpines done in a parallel project. We recommend a follow-up of the monitoring of the Chequered Blue in Halden municipality, especially for the area Torpbukta–«Steinbruddet [N]e, which has been surveyed every year from 2008.en_US
