Endrestøl, A. & Bengtson, R. 2020. Kartlegging av klippeblåvinge Scolitantides orion i Norge 2019. NINA Rapport 1794. Norsk institutt for naturforskning.
Endrestøl, A. & Bengtson, R. 2020. Mapping of the Chequered Blue Butterfly Scolitantides orion in Norway 2019. NINA Report 1794. Norwegian Institute for Nature Research. The Chequered Blue Butterfly Scolitantides orion is one of the rarest and most threatened butterflies in Norway. According to The 2015 Norwegian Red List for Species, the Chequered Blue Butterfly is considered critically endangered (CR) in Norway. This is because a sharp decline in the species’ range in Norway has been observed, and that new surveys of old and other potential sites have not resulted in the discovery of new localities for the butterfly – except a new locality detected in Sponvika at Svinesund in Halden municipality in Østfold (Viken) county 2017. The species is a prioritized species according to the Nature Diversity Act. The report summarizes results of the Chequered Blue survey in the municipality of Halden in 2019. The species was also searched for in Tvedestrand municipality in Agder county in 2019, but still no sign of the species there after 2012. In the area of Torpbukta and the surrounding area in Halden municipality, 245 eggs and 3 larvae of the Chequered Blue were found in 2019, which is a small increase compared to recent years. Also 42 eggs, but no larvae, were found along Hovsveien, while at Nokkedal a total of 16 eggs and one larvae were found. We found 60 eggs and one larvae of the Chequered Blue at the Monolith quarry (including Sveen), and in Sponvika we found 43 eggs and one larvae. A total of 406 eggs and 6 larvae of the Chequered Blue were found in Halden municipality in 2019. We have also counted the number of hostplants (Hylotelephium maximum) and eggs of the Chequered Blue within two 25 m2-areas for 2019. Overall, we see that the number of plants varies a lot over the years, while the number of eggs has generally decreased. However, we believe that these countings does not give a good picture of the situation in the area as a whole. In 2019, a total of 10 individuals of ants were collected on larvae of the Chequered Blue (5 samples in total). One of the species were not previously registered, Temnothorax tuberum (Fabricius, 1775), and it was found at the Monolith quarry. Climate (temperature and rainfall) seems, as expected, to govern the occurrence of the Chequered Blue, although we do not find clear significant relationships. This was particularly evident in 2015, when the number of eggs found were at an all time low, while summer temperatures were low and precipitation was abnormally high. The same decrease in the number of individuals was also seen in Swedish localities in 2015. It did not appear that the prolonged drought in 2018 had a significant negative impact on the species. We recommend a follow-up of the monitoring of the Chequered Blue in Halden municipality, especially for the area Torpbukta–«Steinbruddet [N]», which has been surveyed every years from 2012. At the same time, we believe it will be appropriate to also survey other parts of the Iddefjorden again, especially, as the species was detected in Sponvika in 2017, and that it is found on the Swedish side of the Iddefjord.en_US
