Endrestøl, A. & Bengtson, R. 2015.
The Scarce Heath Coenonympha hero (Linnaeus, 1761) is a butterfly typically found in cultivated meadows, and it has had a clear decline in Norway. Reduced and fragmented populations is the reason why the species was listed as endangered (EN) in the Norwegian Red List, both in 2006, 2010 and 2015. The species is listed on the Bern Convention appendix II «strictly protected fauna species-list» and was also protected by law in Norway in December 2001. A scientific basis for a management action plan for the Scarce Heath was compiled by the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) for the Norwegian Environment Agency in 2010. This scientific basis is later published as a NINA-report in 2012. This report primarily concerns the search for the Scarce Heath in Ringsaker municipality in Hedmark county 2015, but also searches for the species in some other historical sites as well as others’ findings of the species in Norway in 2015 are reported. In 2015, the Scarce Heath was only reported from three municipalities in Norway. An updated list of records for the Scarce Heath in Norway including 2015 is given in this report. The species was found on several occasions in Ringsaker municipality in Hedmark county in 2015, after the remarkable find there in 2014 (never found in that municipality before). In addition to the known locality Haugstuen, the species was detected in a total of five areas within a circle of 1,5 km. The species appears to be linked to 5–6 years old felled forest areas and partly seminatural meadows here, and we assume that there is a great potential for finding it on additional new sites in the municipality (and outside). We therefore recommend additional searches in Ringsaker municipality to enable detection of the species in new locations, but also to make a better assessment of population size there. Several specimens were found on Brønnøya in Asker municipality in Akershus county 2015. This is now probably the only locality of the species in the inner Oslo Fjord, and we stress the importance of the island in the management of the Scarce Heath in Norway. One should conduct a thorough survey here to identify key areas for the species, and consider mitigation and management to strengthen the population here.nb_NO
